Computer Science

The Computer Science area at CIMAT consists of leading national and international researchers working in research, education, specialized training, and technology development. We offer a doctoral program in Science, a Master's degree program and we support the Bachelor's degree program in Computer & Mathematics offered by the University of Guanajuato.

The Computer Science area conducts research in the following main areas:

Signal processing and computer vision. In particular, algorithms for filtering and segmentation, perceptual process modeling (stereo vision, motion perception, color perception, etc.), image registration, robust transmission of images and video (in collaboration with the University of Illinois and INAOE ), image analysis from optical experiments (in collaboration with the Center for Research in Optics), calibration and camera positioning, etc. Applications have been developed in biomedicine in collaboration with the Institute of Neurobiology at UNAM, with Cuba’s Neurosciences Center, with the Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania and with the University of Florida.

Numerical methods and optimization. This includes multi-objective optimization with applications to practical engineering problems, evolutionary algorithms and algorithms for the estimation of distribution with applications to design and global and restricted optimization, numerical solution of partial differential equations, and numerical modeling using finite elements. We have a partnership with the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Barcelona, Spain.

Robotics. This includes motion planning and perception for mobile robots, feasibility conditions for the movement of mobile robots outdoors and visual control of robots. We have partnerships with the University of Illinois, the Laboratory of Analysis and Architecture of Systems (LAAS-CNRS) in Toulouse, France, the University of Liege in Belgium, the University of Zaragoza in Spain and ITESM, Mexico State campus.

Multidimensional data analysis and pattern recognition. This include statistical modeling, the exploration, prediction and classification of large volumes of data, machine learning, information transmission, databases, data mining and pattern recognition.
The Computer Science area organizes events and seminars with the participation of leading national and international researchers. Regular events, some with inter-agency collaboration, include the following:

  • School of Modeling and Numerical Methods
  • Workshop - School of Image Processing
  • Workshop on Robotics and Motion Planning
  • Conference on Neuroimaging
  • Statistical Pattern Recognition Workshop
  • The Summer of Mathematics at CIMAT

The researchers of the Computer Science area also participate in various projects in coordination with state and federal governments and industry.

Head of the Computer Science area: Dr. Johan Van Horebeek
